New Year's Resolution

We're a hardy lot up here in Vancouver, even if the rest of Canada considers us soft because we don't enjoy their -40C winters.  To prove a point, New Year's Day marks the Polar Bear Swim when hundreds of city dwellers take to the waters of English Bay (appropriately).  Many wear fancy dress, and many more turn out to watch these crazy people.  There was the heady smell of "dutch courage" in the air, and we witnessed the police breaking up a party of particularly merry Santas.

It certainly looks like one of those activities that you have to partake in to be counted a true Vancouverite but, like all good resolutions, I think I'll wait until next year...

The crowd gathers.

As do those who are actually going to brave the water.

The starting enclosure.  Is that somebody in a wedding dress?

Santa's reindeer.

And they're off!

Excellent commitment.

For many it was the shortest stay possible - a dip of a few seconds and then a sprint back up the beach.  I think you get a badge for doing this.

For others it was all about the swim.  The man in the lifeboat seems to be taking the names of those that make it all the way (with or without frostbite).

The reindeer from earlier did particularly well.

And it's all over for another year.  What a strange species we are.
