Let the chain take the strain

A slight navigation malfunction occurred today. It didn’t matter as it allowed for two excellent outcomes. One was the eternal playing out of the husband/wife/map-reading scenario, and the other was that we got to use snow chains!

Having been confronted with a ‘Fire Road: Closed’ gate a mile along an icy, snowy, downhill, single-track road, we decided the best course of action was to retrace our steps. But how to get up this treacherous country lane? Luckily we had snow chains in the back of our car, courtesy of dire warnings from friends and Elad and Daphny’s generosity (you saved our lives!)

Following my Cub Scout ‘Be Prepared’ mantra I had also read online all about how to install them. There were instructions in the box too, but I jumped out ready and able. Some back-and-forth (with the car, and verbally with Hannah) and soon we were heading uphill.

The experience was interesting. It still felt like I was driving on ice, slipping here and there, but I was travelling up gradients that would normally have left me spinning and sliding backwards. There were no naive skiers for me to take out on the way up, and after another mile or so we stopped and repeated the operation, but in reverse, kept calm and carried on.

Hannah readies the equipment.

Somewhat off-piste.

Somewhat piste-off.

Job done!
