Kite flying at night

Things are just different down here in Southern California.  There's less granola, fewer strange smells of "medicinal herbs", and no one's going to occupy anything that doesn't sell designer brands.  Gen was born and bred here, and always does an excellent job of navigating us simple country folks away from the chihuahua-toting excesses that threaten on all sides.

We started with the completely amazing pancakes of the Original Pancake House, which (being SoCal) isn't actually the original one, as that was in Oregon.  Filled up and ready to go we headed to Tanaka Farms, a familiar destination.  They were having their quarterly open day with tractor rides, free organic locally produced food, and Christmas trees.

With all the excitement, Frankie (and others) needed a nap.  It was a long one!  By the time she'd been rudely awoken it was getting dark, but that didn't deter us from the main activity of the day: kite flying.  With all the Santa Ana winds of late we thought this might be a more dramatic experience than it was.  It's also hard to find bits that fall off your kite in the dark.  But the little one was extremely happy - as ever - and refused to put her coat on like the hardy English girl she is.

A short stack here is somewhat larger than elsewhere.

Gen adopts her usual appearing-on-my-blog pose.

Maybe Orange County's only u-pick farm...?

Frankie pets one of the animals.

Then we went for a hike in a forest!

And met someone from nearby Disneyland.

Getting on the trailer for the tractor ride.

Here's Farmer Tanaka himself!  He's the third generation of this farming family, and his son is lined up to take over.

Something in the air down here just turns people into movie stars.

Off we go.

All happy to be out on the farm.

Enjoying some lemon cake afterwards.

Gen displays the produce, which may be organic but probably not that tasty.

No James, no one's going to believe you cut it down yourself.

You don't want to remove the netting or it might make a mess of your home.

I've taken Minnie's bed this trip.  That's why she's looking like this.

All ready for kite flying!

E and F.

Somebody's excited!

And both of these two should sleep well tonight.

Action shot!  Jim takes command of flying the real kite (and I manage to keep my hand out of this photo).
