Moh-RV

Did I ever think that camping in a tent was fun? That was obviously before I'd ever stepped foot in an RV. This is the ONLY way to travel. It's like your house...but on wheels! You don't have to freeze half to death overnight, and you don't have to dress in seven layers just to go to the bathroom! Luxury.

That's not to say that we haven't been adventurous. Today we said goodbye to the relative plushnesss of Bakerfield and left a trail of dust across the wilderness. Or, at least, turned off the interstate at the exit marked "Mojave Desert".

We were heading for the Hole-In-The-Wall campground and stopped at the information centre of the same name. There, kind Ranger Kevin told us that we could camp anywhere in the park, for free, pointed us towards the middle of nowhere and told us to look for a tree with a fire pit next to it. After a short but precipitous hike that included climbing a canyon using metal rings, we took the RV out into the nothingness.

Finding the site was actually pretty straightforward, and soon this silent enclave far from civilisation was filled with the sound of our generator and the light leaking through our thin curtains. That kept the wild beasts and ominous spirits of the desert away. And while this place may be dry, it is certainly cold as well. So we just turned the RV's central heating on. Like I say, it's the only way to see the great outdoors!

This morning it was Anat's turn to take the wheel.

Hannah has set up her "office" on the dining table, and a Skype session at 70mph was initiated.

Does Chevron own this?  I don't think so.

A stop for gas, and I decided the give the windscreen a quick clean.

Then it was time for breakfast, because in an RV you can eat anywhere!

Stopping at Hole-in-the-Wall information centre.

Desert to the north, desert to the south, desert to the east...

These people kept following us.

A rocky view on our hike.

Hmmm.

Flat desert.

Into the wild.

Shauli indulges in a little free-styling (with one broken hand!)

Hannah, Shauli, and the strange rocks.

Family group.

The sun is setting.

Rock trolls.

Mountain rescue.

Up the ravine.

Bringing up the rear.

Didn't Butch Cassidy stay here too?

And there's the hole!

A sign that would have been useful at the start of the hike.

Who's the spikiest?

There's a lot of interesting flora around here.

It's all too much for Arbel.

Hannah enjoys all the comforts of home.

And now the latest in the series "David tries to take photos of the stars without really knowing how to".

An oasis in the desert night.
