The one and only

We're all heading south for the next few days.  Hannah got to fly down, as she's helping out at the Chevron World Challenge.  Emily and I are following more sedately by car, driving down the Pacific Coast Highway and probably hitting LA at around Friday night rush hour.

We began with a stop at Monterey and lunch with Jack, where we got caught in a police shoot-out (sort of).  From there we wove down the coast, the pounding surf on our right and the rock-fall-prone cliffs on our left.  There wasn't a cloud in the sky, mainly because a huge storm that is sweeping through had blown them all away.  The wind whipped the surf off the top of the waves and annoyed the elephant seals.

First stop, for lunch.

And this is what I got - it's swordfish steak!  Amazing.

The somewhat choppy Pacific waters.

Emily spotted a sea otter!

The unforgiving coast.

An altercation between elephant seals.

Quiet, you'll wake the babies!

A herd (?) of seals.

No surfers today.

Things were thankfully more peaceful down at Avila.

The Inn at Avila Beach.  Hannah and I stayed here around 9 years ago.  Disappointingly the proprietor didn't seem to recognise me.

Em smiles above my dessert this evening.  It's apple and cheesecake wrapped in a tortilla and, according to the menu, "lightly deep fried".  So good.
