It was Chinese New Year recently, which Wikipedia tells me lasts 15 days and would explain why this afternoon saw one of the biggest New Year parades in the world take place in San Francisco. It was certainly huge - two-and-a-half hours of floats, dragons, and dancing children passed by. We watched it with the Singers, walked across town to meet Dana and Amir, and watched it all again!
And they're off! Firecracker sellers had a field day.
It's the year of the ox ("prosperity through fortitude and hard work" - so probably not my year). Here are some other years!
A flock of dragons.
A float with lots of eyes.
I was trying to get into the ox frame of mind.
Strange bobble-headed people.
Flags.
Best seats in the house for the Singer girls.
Not sure.
Another dragon! This was the main, huge, lit-up one that a lot of people followed all the way around the city.
No idea what this was about.
The dragon winds its way through Chinatown.
Although I hate to admit it (because it happens every time) Dana has much better photos on her blog.
Afterwards we went for dinner in a Chinatown restaurant. The "special" promised kung po chicken, sweet and sour pork, Cantonese spring rolls, etc. and we looked forward to sharing several dishes. When it arrived it was all on one plate! Including the won ton soup!! I dug around in the steamed rice to see if I could find my fortune cookie.
