The Emerald City

OK, so a road trip is fun until you realise just how much road is out there. Today both Dana and I had had enough driving, and decided to zip to Seattle as efficiently as we could.

We made a quick stop in Portland for a coffee and, of course, you drive three days away from San Francisco and end up stuck in a gay pride march. We sipped lattes as a million rainbow coloured balloons drifted by. Then it was north again, the most exciting event of this bit being the rest stop that served free coffee!

Finally the gleaming towers of Seattle's downtown appeared and after a few wrong turns there was Amir stood on a corner smiling, looking thinner but no worse for destabilising a small West African country.

Dana and Amir's new apartment is a huge hotel room (complete with maid service) in a complex that includes three gyms, several pools, and a library. Lots of interns from Amazon, Microsoft, and the other tech companies hereabouts live here over the summer, and so I got to meet up with Loren, Tamara, Evie, and Lyla for dinner. I was welcomed with open arms as soon as the girls spotted the packets of pink Jelly Belly beans I'd brought with me from faraway California.

Seattle's on the sign! It can't be that far away then...can it?
